The XC90 was a hit when launched in 2003, for its understated quality, practicality and luxury. Now it's had a facelift; we drove one to see how this multi-purpose seven-seater SUV punches at a higher weight.

1. Looks
Volvo is pitching its flagship off-roader at the luxury end of the SUV market; a shorter roofline, due to the sloping tailgate, is designed to make it clear this is most definitely not a Volvo estate.
8/10

2. Looks inside
Volvo likes to ensure its drivers are unflustered; the information display is set low and the central console is angled away from the cabin, helping create the feeling of space.
8/10

3. Practicality
The XC90 seats up to seven, while boot space can be increased to 1,837 litres with all seats down.
9/10

4. Ride and Handling
The XC90 shrugs off even the most demanding bumps with disdain. The handling can't match the BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne but the handling inspires confidence.
8/10

5. Performance
The 185bhp D5 turbodiesel with a six-speed automatic gearbox covers 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and has a top speed of 118mph. Go for the manual and the 0-62mph drops to 10.9 seconds while the top speed increases to 121mph.

6. Running Costs
The D5 manual averages 34mpg; the auto averages 31.4mpg. This diesel also offers the lowest CO2 emissions (219g/km), placing it in tax band F.
6/10

7. Reliability
Volvo has a reputation for building reliable cars and there's no indication that its flagship SUV is any exception.
7/10

8. Safety
ESP, traction control, antielectronic brake force distribution and brake assist are standard; it's no surprise the XC90 has a five-star EuroNCAP rating.
10/10

9. Equipment
All XC90s have alloy wheels, front fog lights, rear park assist, 8-speaker CD system, steering wheel audio controls and leather gear knob. Posher editions get electric driver's seats, leather-faced upholstery, 6CD multi-changer and automatic windscreen wipers plus bi-xenon headlamps, wood trim and heated electric front seats.
8/10

10. X-Factor
The XC90 is a very competent car off-road or ferrying the family about. While drivers will enjoy an engaging drive, passenger will find the car incredibly comfortable as the seats are great and the ride is superb. A great car for taking the slog out of long journeys.
