UK motorists have bought two million Vauxhall Astras since the model hit our streets in 1980; the fifth-generation model was launched in 2004 and should definitely be considered if you're thinking of buying a five-door hatchback.
1. Looks
The rising waistline gives the Astra a dynamic appearance, while at the rear the hatch opening sits well between the rear light clusters, which have been subtly redesigned for 2007.
8/10
2. Looks inside
The instruments are easy to read through the easily-adjusted steering wheel, while the central console is uncluttered and classy. The complementary grey, silver and black plastics are easy on the eye and robust throughout. The overall effect is calming and stylish, while the part-leather seats are comfortable, with good lumbar support.
8/10
3. Practicality
With all seats up the Astra offers 350 litres of boot space; this increases to 1300 litres by folding the rear seats. There's plenty of leg and headroom front and rear too.
7/10
4. Ride and Handling
Not only is the handling good, but the Astra is also comfortable on long journeys and nippy enough for urban driving.
8/10
5. Performance
The manual 115bhp 1.6 petrol Astra gives 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 120mph - perfect for urban or motorway driving.
