Auto Trader Ten Point Test Rating: 77%
This seven-seater, aimed at family drivers and empty nesters, now sits on its own platform to line up against the Vauxhall Zafira, Ford C-Max, Volkswagen Touran, Renault Grand Scenic and Citroen Picasso.

1: Looks
The Verso used to be a variant of the Corolla; now it's a model in its own right with a bigger platform that offers a tardis-like use of space and certainly doesn't look like a seven-seater.
7/10

2: Looks Inside
There's a lofty and comfortable driving position with a height-adjustable front seat that offers better shoulder support and a more substantial, raised seat base. The dials are clear and the long sunroof opens up the interior.
7/10

3: Practicality
There are seven seats, although the third row is of limited use. The 32-permutation seating offers up to 1,696-litres of carrying capacity and there are cubbyholes throughout the cabin.
9/10

4: Ride and handling
The Verso's new platform incorporates a longer wheelbase, wider tracks and revised suspension. It handles well considering its height and will transport driver and passengers in comfort.
7/10

5: Performance
The 1.8 petrol Verso covers 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds and has a top speed of 118mph. Our test car featured a six-speed manual gearbox, but an automatic is also available.
7/10

6: Running costs
CO2 emissions for the manual petrol model we drove are 165g/km and average fuel consumption 40.4mpg.
7/10

7: Reliability
Toyota is the fourth-placed manufacturer in the Reliability Index; it's easy to believe claims the Verso's components will last double the warranty's three years or 60,000 miles.
9/10

8: Safety
The Verso was yet to undergo crash testing, but expect a five-star rating. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Brake Assist, ESP, Traction Control, Hill-start Assist Control and third row airbags will all help.
8/10

9: Equipment
All Versos have air conditioning, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, electric front windows, body-coloured bumpers and door handles. The TR also gets Bluetooth connectivity, an aux-in socket, electric rear windows, front foglights and alloy wheels. T-Spirit adds climate control, automatic wipers and headlights, Smart Entry & Start and cruise control.
8/10

10: X-factor
The fact this car can swallow seven occupants requires a double-take. It really doesn't look that big. Not all drivers are trying to make a statement and the Verso is still a great no-fuss family-shifter, just that little bit bigger and better.
8/10
