The Octavia vRS combines a sporty drive, family car practicality and an eye-catching price tag. The 2009 vRS has been updated to compete with rivals including the Ford Focus ST, Volkswagen Golf GTi and Mazda 3 MPS.

1: Looks
The 2009 vRS has undergone subtle design improvements to produce a more contemporary and better-looking car. Larger door mirrors and headlights are joined by red brake callipers, deeper bumpers, boot spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels and twin chrome exhaust, plus LED running lights.
9/10

2: Looks Inside
The interior sees a range of improvements such as touch-screen entertainment controls, and new trim, controls and instrument panels.
8/10

3: Practicality
No compromises here, with the vRS offering the same usability as the regular Octavia, with 560 litres of hatchback space (1350 with seats folded) and 580 litres in the estate (1620 with the seats folded).
10/10

4: Ride and handling
The VRS gets modified shock absorbers and springs for a sportier response and 12mm lower ride height. Steering is sharp with a substantial feel that rewards enthusiastic driving. Comfort and fun are combined to perfection.
9/10

5: Performance
The vRS diesel covers the 0-62mph sprint in 8.4 seconds and has a top speed of 139mph. It feels faster than that thanks to the DSG transmission with the option of a more responsive sport mode.
8/10

6: Running costs
The diesel returns 49.6mpg and produces CO2 emissions of 150g/km.
8/10

7: Reliability
The Octavia has helped change the perception of the company; much of this is down to Skoda's fifth place in the Reliability Index, making it the highest-placed European manufacturer.
9/10

8: Safety
Anti-lock brakes, traction control, brake assist and ESP are standard. Driver and front passenger front and side airbags are fitted as standard with curtain airbags an option.
8/10

9: Equipment
It's quicker to list what you don't get rather than what you do, as all the features mentioned here are standard. Impressive. The only options on our car were the Xenon headlights (£700) and multi-function steering wheel (£480).
10/10

10: X-factor
Fun, practical, reliable. It's tough to choose one, but like the Octavia models as a whole this car offers supreme practicality.
9/10
