Overall rating: 80%
The third generation Renault Laguna looks set to be the best yet, with a level of quality which raises the bar for the French carmaker.

1. Looks
The Laguna is handsome from most angles, but its large boot pushes the rear window up, and the rear lights are placed high too, making the Laguna look tall from behind.
7/10

2. Looks inside
Interior style and quality is one of the most improved areas in recent years, and the Laguna hasn't been left out - it can now compete with the top players. Materials are high quality; the half leather and Alcantara seats in the car we tested were very attractive.
9/10

3. Practicality
The Laguna's boot carries a respectable 450 litres. The rear bench has three full seatbelts; leg room for rear passengers is good and front passengers have lots of space.
7/10

4. Ride and Handling
The Laguna's ride is firmer than most French cars, so it corners with little body roll. All of the controls are light, especially the accurate steering; enthusiast drivers should seek out the Laguna GT, with four-wheel steering.
8/10

5. Performance
Our test car featured a refined 150bhp 2-litre diesel, giving the Laguna to a 0-60mph time of 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph.
7/10

6. Running Costs
Our 2-litre test car failed to match the manufacturer's 47.1mpg claim, returning a 43mpg average. The 170bhp emits 210g/km of carbon dioxide placing it in tax band F with its charge of £210 annually.
8/10

7. Reliability
Renault has a poor reliability record, but it's hoped the carmaker has turned a corner with its new Laguna; only time will tell if it has succeeded.
8/10

8. Safety
The Laguna achieves a five-star EuroNCAP rating; it scored four stars in child occupant tests. Standard safety features include ABS with brake force distribution, ESP, traction control and six airbags.
10/10

9. Equipment
All Lagunas have alloy wheels, keyless entry, electric windows, leather steering wheel and heated door mirrors. The Dynamique S also has leather/Alcantara heated and electrically adjustable front sports seats, cruise control, climate control, plus automatic wipers and headlights.
9/10

10. X-Factor
The Laguna is a safe car which will get you to your destination feeling relaxed thanks to its refinement and usability. As a family car or a long distance travel companion it makes a great proposition.
8/10
