It was always going to be tough replacing the original Focus, yet the Blue Oval managed it in 2005. It was better in almost every way over the old car; in 2008 it was facelifted, but can the Focus still cut it?1. Looks
When a car is so common, it's easy to overlook what a handsome design it is. This facelifted car still cuts quite a dash on the roads.

2. Looks inside
The 2008 facelift saw a raft of changes to the cabin, while the materials are now among the best in the class. The instrument cluster has a premium-feeling red glow, an uprated console is available on top models while sportier variants also get a start button.

3. Practicality
The Focus hatchback is practical enough for most, with 282-396 litres of space available, depending on whether a full size spare wheel, a space saver spare or tyre repair kit is fitted. With the seats folded, there's up to 1,258 litres of room while the cabin is plenty big enough for four.
8/10
4. Ride and Handling
The Focus has always been an excellent driver's car with responsive steering, a superb chassis and decent ride comfort. Drivers looking for a supple ride should steer clear of the Sport Pack though.

5. Performance
The 2-litre diesel engine we tested develops 136bhp to give 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds and a 126mph maximum.
