The Audi TT RS has the Porsche Cayman S, BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK licked. At least in a straight line it does - hitting 62mph in just 4.7 seconds. But how successful is the whole package?
1. Looks
The TT is stunning as standard; the RS treatment simply makes everything bigger, bolder and more aggressive. The optional 20-inch wheels fitted to our test car stole the show, but the boot-mounted spoiler looks out of place so many buyers will probably retain the standard pop-up spoiler instead.
8/10
2. Looks inside
Everything feels modern and solidly built and the ergonomics are excellent. The sports steering wheel looks great and the bucket seats are supportive, but may be too racy for all but the slimmest hips.
9/10
3. Practicality
The boot can accommodate 290 litres, or 700 litres with the small rear seats folded. The rear seats aren't big enough for adults, but they're handy for shopping bags and should accommodate most kids.
7/10
4. Ride and Handling
The TT RS is grippy, secure and fast but the ride is firm and while there's plenty of grip and pace, it's all done without enough interaction. The ultimate TT is very fast but only moderately rewarding.
7/10
5. Performance
The 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine is absolutely fantastic; with 340bhp and 332lb/ft it accelerates the RS from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, 0-124mph (200km/h) in 15.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 174mph.
