The A3 hatchback is the cheapest way into Audi ownership; it competes with the BMW 1-Series and VW Golf. Like most manufacturers, Audi is targeting green buyers who wants low emissions, high fuel economy and cost-effective motoring.
1. Looks
Facelifted in 2008, the A3 is a pretty hatchback that benefits from the LED headlights which star in the Audi range. It rolls on 16-inch alloys and as the green model, the TDIe has a few bodywork adjustments to make it more streamlined.

2. Looks inside
Audi knows how to make an interior; the A3's is a joy to sit in. It's not flamboyant, just simple with dark plastics and clear dials, all beautifully manufactured.

3. Practicality
On the three-door A3, rear access is an issue, although in the back there's room for two adults and decent all-round vision for the driver. The boot's 350-litre capacity is competitive.

4. Ride and Handling
The A3's ride is fairly uncompromising, ironing out creases in roads and with minimal bodyroll through the bends. However, the low-rolling resistance tyres don't could offer more grip.

5. Performance
The 1.9-litre diesel engine has been used in endless cars from VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat. It develops 103bhp and 184lb/ft of pulling power to give 0-62mph in 11 seconds and a 120mph top speed.
