The Volkswagen Polo has been crowned Car of the Year 2010. It beat six other cars to take first prize, which was awarded by a panel of 59 European motoring experts.

Volkswagen's latest supermini received 59 votes and 25 winning votes. The Toyota iQ was close behind with 58 votes and 20 winning votes. Third place went to the new Vauxhall Astra, which has recently gone on sale.

The result was determined from a shortlist of 33 new cars, of which seven finalists were chosen at the start of November and the winner was announced today.

When Auto Trader drove the Polo earlier this year, senior web journalist Andy Goodwin said, "We're so impressed with it as an all-round package, we think it's among the best three cars in its class and should be on any supermini buyer's short list."

Check back tomorrow for Auto Trader's full Ten Point Test of the new Volkswagen Polo. Last year the Vauxhall Insignia took the crown, beating Ford's Fiesta by one point.
