Volkswagen has announced full details of its all-new powerful yet ultra-efficient Polo GTI. The 2010 Volkswagen Polo GTI promises to be the fastest, most focused and cleanest quick Polo to date.

Its engine has shrunk from 1.8 to 1.4-litres, but the turbocharger has now been joined by a supercharger and direct fuel injection, making this a far more advanced outfit. This is mated to an extremely-efficient seven-speed DSG semi-automatic 'box as standard.

This means that it produces a mammoth 178bhp - a huge hike from the outgoing model's 150bhp - helping it to sprint from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 142mph.

The new Polo GTI is also capable of returning 47.9 mpg and emitting 139g/km of CO2 - a 25 per cent improvement on the previous-generation model.

The suspension has been lowered by 15mm and it comes fitted with ESP, Hill Climb Assist and Volkswagen's XDS electronic differential, to improve traction and handling.

Taking design cues from its older sibling, the Polo rides on 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and comes with LED daytime running lights, red brake callipers, twin-exhausts and GTI badging.

On the inside, it gets sporty dials, a flat-bottomed GTI steering wheel, gearshift paddles, aluminium pedals, sports seats, red stitching, tartan trim and gloss-black trim. The new Volkswagen Polo GTI is due in the UK later this summer.

This comes just days before Volkswagen is set to unveil a pair of reworked Golf GTIs at Worthersee, Austria.

The first is the result of a collaboration with Adidas and will incorporate styling changes, including new wheels, sports seats and headlights from the Golf R. It will be limited to just 4,410 units.

The second debutant is dubbed the Golf GTI Excessive Edition. It will feature new bodywork, larger brakes, new springs and a free-breathing exhaust. Expect pictures to follow later this week.
