Volkswagen has revealed details of the all-new European version of the Jetta. The Skoda Octavia and Volvo S40 rival will be available in petrol, diesel and BlueMotion versions.

Instantly recognisable as a Volkswagen, the new Jetta is inspired by the NCC concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show in January. The Jetta has clean, simple lines and adopts the latest Volkswagen design language seen most recently on the new Passat and Sharan.

Almost looking like a scaled-down version of the range-topping Phaeton from the front, the horizontal grille fins are designed to give the impression that the Jetta is much lower and wider than it is. At the back, the intricately styled light units complement the simple lines.

Inside, the interior design is similar to the current Golf. Highlights include a new centre console, entertainment and climate control systems and steering wheel design. In addition, the new Jetta is 90mm longer so rear legroom is increased by 67mm over the outgoing car.

This car might look similar to the US car launched earlier this year, but European Jettas benefit from a more sophisticated suspension system similar to the Golf's. Other suspension changes for the European Jetta include a wider rear track and revised springs and dampers.

The sixth generation of the Jetta is offered with a pair of 1.4-litre TSI engines, developing 120 bhp and 158 bhp, and two diesel engines with a 1.6-litre TDI 104bhp and a 2.0-litre TDI developing 138bhp. The 1.6-litre TDI unit will have BlueMotion Technology modifications including Stop/Start and battery regeneration.
