The Volkswagen Amarok pick-up, set to arrive in Britain next year, has been given the Pick-Up of the Year Award by an international committee of specialist journalists.
The prize, part of the International Van of the Year Award scheme, equivalent of the Car of the Year, is being awarded for the first time.
The Amarok took top honours for its mix of on- and off-road abilities and its carrying capacity, said to be better than its rivals. It can carry a 1,057kg payload and tow up to 2.8 tonnes. The vehicle's interior space, controls and economy also won praise.
The German pick-up is fitted with a variety of electronic safety aids including an electronic differential lock, ESP, a hill hold function, descent assist and anti-lock brakes designed to shorten off-road stopping distances.
The Amarok will move Volkswagen into an entirely new market segment. The vehicle will compete against Japanese models such as the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200, Mazda BT50 and Ford Ranger.
