Vauxhall has released details of its hot-hatchback coupé, the Astra GTC, a new rival to the Volkswagen Scirocco and Renault Mégane Coupé.
The GTC is the third body style to come from the Astra platform, although only the door handles and aerial have been carried over. It's geared as a more driver-focused alternative to the Astra though, with the front HiPerStrut suspension carried over from the Insignia VXR.
Other sporty features include a 15mm reduced ride height and a 10mm longer wheelbase, plus a wider track all round and chunkier wheels for improved stability.
The GTC will be available with a choice of four engines; one diesel and three petrols. The diesel, a 2-litre CDTi, is an uprated version of the unit in the Insignia and Astra. It offers a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 130mph, while returning a combined fuel economy of 57.9mph and CO2 emissions of 129g/km.
Alternatively, there are two petrol versions of the 1.4-litre turbo with either 118bhp or 138bhp, or a 178bhp 1.6-litre turbo. Final performance figures have yet to be confirmed, however Vauxhall claims the 1.6 should hit a top speed of 132mph. A more extreme VXR version is expected in 2012.
Standard kit includes 18-inch alloy-wheels, DAB stereo and USB functionality, with SRi spec models equipped with tinted windows, onboard computer, leather-trimmed steering wheel and fog lamps.
All models get stop and start technology as standard. Vauxhall's FlexRide adaptive damping system, which offers three driving modes that automatically adjust to the differing road surfaces and driving styles, will also be offered as an option.
Prices start at £18,495 for the entry-level 1.4, £1,100 cheaper than the cheapest Volkswagen Scirocco. Order books are now open with deliveries expected to start in November.
