An even more powerful 500bhp version of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS has been announced, costing a cool £128,466.

The 911 GT3 RS 4.0 - to give it its full title - is expected to be one of the world's ultimate track day cars when it goes on sale in July, in a limited production run of 600 cars.

Almost every component has been honed by Porsche's motorsport division, including the 4-litre flat-six engine lifted straight from its 911 GT3 RSR racing car. It also delivers its maximum power at a spine-tingling 8,250 rpm.

Zero to 62mph takes just 3.9 seconds, with gear changes down to the driver, thanks to a six-speed manual 'box. It has 56bhp more than the standard 911 GT3 RS, which costs around £19,000 less.

The adjustable suspension has been revised to accommodate for the bigger engine and extra power, while a lightweight carbon fibre, bonnet, bucket seats, front wings and plastic rear windows keep its weight down to 1,360kg, which is 10kg less than the standard 3.8-litre GT3 RS. As with the standard GT3 RS, there are no rear seats - instead you'll find a roll cage and fire extinguisher.

Even the aerodynamics have been honed to suit track use, with front bodywork adaptations and a revised rear spoiler which now provide 190kg more downforce at top speed.
