Toyota is unveiling an Auris concept complete with hybrid technology at this month's Frankfurt motor show. The Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept features the under-bonnet technology from the bigger Prius in a body that is almost identical to the standard Auris.

Toyota has already confirmed the Auris concept will make it to showrooms, with production starting on the new hybrid early next year. The brand hopes to get the first cars to customers around September 2010.

The production version of the hybrid Auris will be very similar to the concept on display in Frankfurt as the Auris is not due for replacement until 2012. It will feature some unique design elements as it aims to lower its drag and increase its efficiency.

The Auris hybrid will share the Prius' 1.8-litre petrol hybrid engine, but will not be quite as efficient as its bigger sibling as it is not as aerodynamic. It is still hoped that the Auris will boast emissions below 100g/km and fuel efficiency around 65mpg.

Toyota is remaining cagey on prices for the production version, but expects it to cost more than the current Auris, but less than the Prius, making a price-tag of around £18,000 likely.
