The Toyota Prius+ seven-seater has been unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, expanding the Prius range to two body styles for the first time.

Designed to better accommodate families, the Prius+ has three independent middle row seats and two rear seats. Toyota says it has the lowest fuel consumption of any car with this layout.

Built from the ground up, its design is a thorough evolution of the Prius hatchback, not a simple elongation of that car's bodywork.

It has an extended roofline which features a fixed panoramic sunroof and cuts through the air with maximum efficiency to save fuel.

Fitted with the latest Hybrid Synergy Drive consisting of a petrol engine, electric motor and battery pack, CO2 emissions should be under 100g/km making the Prius+ free to tax.

The battery pack has been upgraded and now features more advanced Lithium Ion technology, which allows it to be smaller and take up less space in the cabin and boot.

As with the smaller hatchback, three 'driving modes' will be available including 'EV', 'ECO' and 'Power'. The first of the trio allows the Prius+ to use just electric power at low speeds, while 'ECO' is best for general driving. 'Power' mode allows greater response for overtakes or driving on demanding roads.

The Toyota Prius+ is due to arrive in Spring 2012.
