Volkswagen has launched the most efficient Golf yet, and it's capable of 74mpg. The latest model to wear VW's efficient Bluemotion badge is also the cleanest Golf so far, as it brings CO2 emissions down to 99g/km.

It uses a 104bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine that still manages to take the Bluemotion to 62mph in 11.3 seconds. It achieves its low CO2 rating and high fuel efficiency thanks to technology such as a stop/start system, longer gear ratios, regenerative braking and a trip computer that advises when to change gear.

A sports-styling kit also aims to reduce drag and improve efficiency, as well as help the Bluemotion stand out in the range. This kit brings sports bumpers, a rear spoiler and side skirts, while the car also gets 15 inch alloy wheels and chrome touches on the grille.

Specification is based on the standard Golf S, including seven airbags and climate control. Costing from £17,325, the new Golf Bluemotion will be £785 more than the standard 1.6-litre diesel Golf, but has the benefit of free road tax thanks to its 99g/km emissions.

It is available to order now and the first customers should get their cars in January. This latest version takes the right to wear the Bluemotion badge from a 107g/km, 68.9mpg model that was announced back in July of this year. That model will remain in the Golf range but will now be known as the Golf Bluemotion Technology.
