One in five people would love to buy back the first car they owned, according to research released today by AutoTrader.co.uk.

The survey found 20 per cent of people would buy a new car because it reminded them of the first car they owned.

Of the 2,370 people asked, 16 per cent saw their first cars go to the scrap yard and 10 per cent said they were 'genuinely devastated' to say goodbye.

The majority of respondents (64 per cent) said the age of a replacement car wouldn't matter as long as it was a working and roadworthy copy of the model they used to drive.

At the other end of the spectrum, 10 per cent of respondents preferred new cars and said they wouldn't consider buying a car that is two to five years old.

Auto Trader Marketing Director Matt Thompson said of the research: "First car nostalgia rings true with us all. Whether it's leaving the hand brake off the first time you parked on a hill or fun-filled road trips with friends, the first car carries with it many memories.

"We see a huge demand for older cars, whether it is for sentimental reasons or simply as a cost-effective and road-worthy run around. There will always be a great market for these type of vehicles - and now even those that can't wait to ditch old faithful in favour of a newer model can benefit via competitive swappage schemes."

The survey was conducted by eDigital Research in June 2010 on behalf of Auto Trader.
