The Scrappage scheme's biggest winners have been announced, with Hyundai coming out on top. Hyundai sold 43,992 cars through the scheme, closely followed by Ford with 43,874 new cars registered.

The Government's scrappage scheme came to end on March 22 having generated nearly 400,000 new car registrations.

Over the past ten months, two out of every five new cars registered in the UK came through the scheme, providing a vital stimulus for the UK motor industry, boosting the market and helping to protect jobs throughout the supply chain.

New car sales in the UK rose for the ninth consecutive month in March, up 26.6 per cent on the same month last year. During March, a total of 397,383 new cars were registered with sales again boosted by scrappage, which accounted for more than one in ten sales.

Ford came out on top, with the Fiesta and Focus emerging as the top two best sellers. Registrations of UK built cars rose by 52.1 per cent during the same period.

Meanwhile, the number of cars on UK roads has dropped for the first time since the Second World War - and the first peacetime decline since vehicle records began in 1904. SMMT data for 2009 shows a total of 31,035,791 cars on the road, representing a 0.7 per cent fall compared to 2008.
