More than a quarter of a million cars have now been purchased using the scrappage scheme. The government scheme allows new car buyers to claim a £2,000 discount when they trade in a car which is at least nine-and-a-half years old.

It has proven so popular the government extended the scheme in September. There is enough money for a total of 400,000 cars to be scrapped. At the end of November, 282,898 cars have been ordered using scrappage.

The scheme also seems to have achieved its goal of encouraging people to drive more environmentally-friendly cars.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders the average CO2 emissions of a car bought through the scheme was 133g/km. That's 27 per cent less than the cars traded in, and 10 per cent less than the average for all new cars sold.

It has also helped support new car sales, which increased by 57.6 per cent in November. More than one in five new cars bought in November - 21.6 per cent - were purchased on the scrappage scheme.
