The Toyota Aygo has been updated to make the ownership prospect even more appealing. The 1.0-litre engine has been tweaked and while power and performance remain unchanged, CO2 emissions have been reduced to just 99g/km, meaning zero road tax.

Fuel economy is also improved, from 61.3 to 65.7mpg, although cars with the optional automatic gearbox have CO2 emissions of 104g/km and combined fuel economy of 63.8mpg.

Costs are further minimised by the Aygo's low insurance group. The current model sits between groups 1E and 3E, dependent on version, which is as low as it's possible to go.

The forthcoming version is likely to occupy the same groups, so it'll be as cheap to run as sister cars the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107.

The external styling has been tweaked to bring the Aygo in line with Toyota's current design theme. The front end echoes the Yaris supermini, and has been widened to give a more purposeful stance. A new front bumper houses integrated fog lights and a larger air intake, whilst the bonnet has also been re-profiled.

Rear tinted glass, a new hub-cap design, and a choice of seven paint finishes, complete the exterior makeover.

Toyota has also addressed some of the criticisms levelled at the original Aygo. The cabin is now made from higher quality plastics and the fit and finish have been improved. A leather steering wheel (with paddles on automatic versions) and colour co-ordinated dials and air vents, provide a more attractive environment for passengers.

The opening angle of the rear parcel shelf has been revised, to improve access into the boot space, and additional sound insulation has been employed to decrease the amount of three-cylinder thrum percolating into the cabin.

The new Aygo is due to make its official debut at the Brussels motor show in January, before going on sale in the UK in March. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but expect the base model to be well under £9,000.
