The Range Rover Evoque has debuted at the Paris Motor Show. The most radical car from Land Rover since the original Range Rover of the 1970s, it's set to widen the brand's appeal.

The Evoque is part two-door SUV and part coupe, with a 2.2-litre diesel engine emitting just 130g/km and returning 58mpg in front-wheel drive guise - slightly less if equipped with four-wheel drive.

Inside, Land Rover's designers have worked hard to keep the famous Land Rover driving position, but make it feel more like sitting in a sports saloon. The materials used are first rate and up-to-date features like a Jaguar XF-style rotary gear selector will come as standard.

Land Rover says the Evoque will offer the most on-road fun of any car in its range, as it's been designed for on-road use. Clever suspension containing magnetic fluid will be offered to tailor the balance of ride and handling, as will Land Rover's famous Terrain Response system to tweak the car's chassis depending on the driving surface.

As well as the frugal 2.2-litre diesel engine, which is expected to make up the bulk of UK sales, a new 2-litre petrol engine will be offered. This engine will propel the Evoque from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds.

Three 'design themes' will be available - Pure, Prestige and Dynamic - each offering a different interior and exterior look.

Final prices haven't been confirmed, but the Evoque is expected to start from around £30,000 when it goes on sale in the summer.
