These are the first official details and pictures of the fastest road-going 911 to date: the Porsche GT2 RS, powered by a twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat six engine, tuned to deliver 620bhp - 60bhp more than the standard 911 GT2.

Using carbon fibre for the bonnet, rear wing and seats, the GT2 RS is 70kg lighter at 1370kg. This gives it a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 453bhp per tonne, so it can sprint from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, 0-99mph in 6.8 seconds, 0-124mph in 9.8sec and 0-186mph in 28.9sec. Top speed is reported to be 205mph.

Porsche also claims that during recent testing the 911 GT2 RS has lapped the 13-mile Nürburgring-Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 18 seconds. This makes it the fastest series production car on standard road tyres to have ever lapped the legendary German track.

But despite the extra power and performance, Porsche claims the GT2 RS is capable of returning 23.7 mpg while emitting 284 g/km - a 5 per cent improvement versus the standard car. Power is fed through lightweight 19-inch forged alloy rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Production will be limited to just 500 units when the the 911 GT2 RS goes on sale in the UK in September. But with prices starting at £164,107 - a £30k premium over the standard GT2 - this performance won't come cheap.

The 911 GT2 RS will get its public unveiling at the Moscow Auto Fair in August. Porsche projects all 500 units will be accounted for before then.
