Polo wins World Car of the Year 2010

The Volkswagen Polo has been awarded the title 'World Car of the Year 2010', beating the Mercedes E-Class and Toyota Prius to the top spot, making it two years in a row for Volkswagen, following its success with the Golf last year.

Chairman of Volkswagen AG's Board of Management Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn said, "We're honoured that the Volkswagen Polo was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors. After the great triumph of the Golf last year, we are delighted to repeat this success with the new Polo."

To date, more than 230,000 customers worldwide have placed orders for the latest version of the Volkswagen Polo, which also won European Car of the Year 2010.

In a separate award, VW's low-emission BlueMotion brand - which consists of the Golf, Passat, and Polo - beat the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius to be declared the 2010 World Green Car of the Year.Now in its seventh year, previous World Car of the Year awards winners include the Mazda 2 in 2008, the Lexus LS460 in 2007, the BMW 3-Series in 2006 and the Audi A6 in 2005.

A top ten shortlist was announced in January, before a second round of voting in February when jurors were asked to score the top ten candidates based on merit, value, safety, environment and emotional appeal.
