A Bugatti Veyron has been badly damaged after careering into a lagoon. Reports suggest the driver of the £1 million hypercar was distracted by a low-flying pelican as he travelled north on Interstate 45 just south of the hurricane levee near Omega Bay, Texas. The full extent of damage caused by the Veyron meeting with the saltwater lagoon is unknown but it's unlikely to be good news for the driver.

According to the Galveston Daily News, the Veyron's 1,001bhp engine 'gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died'.

And let's be honest, water is not the Bugatti's natural environment - being parked outside a five star hotel is.

It's not been a great year for supercars, with a McLaren F1 and Ferrari Enzo seriously damaged by fire and various Lamborghinis on their way to the scrapyard.

But this is the first damaged Bugatti Veyron we've heard about since 2007 when the front end of a red and black model was seriously damaged in Shepperton, Surrey.
