The BMW X3 was centre stage at the Paris Motor Show, where it can be seen in the metal for the first time. The X3 is said to have the lowest emissions of any four-wheel drive car in its class, which includes the Land Rover Freelander and Audi Q5.

BMW says it has worked hard to address criticisms of the previous model's poor ride comfort and will now offer Variable Damper Control to allow the driver to tweak the balance between comfort and a sporty drive.

The BMW X3 features permanent four-wheel drive and can vary the amount of power sent to the front and rear wheels depending on how and where the car is driven.

The new X3 is said to offer improved off-road ability, something the previous model was heavily criticised for. Just one engine will be available when the car launches later this year: a 2-litre diesel which will produce 184bhp, return 50.4mpg and emit a class-leading 149g/km of CO2, for lower road tax.

The new X3 represents a quantum leap in its design. While the old model looked forgettable, the new model looks like a mini BMW X5, with hints of BMW X1.

The models on show revealed a high-quality interior with BMW's IDrive control system for the audio, navigation and air-conditioning system. The reddish-brown leather is likely to be offered as an option
