No hybrid for Toyota Avensis

Toyota has ruled out a hybrid version of its Avensis, quashing rumours the company will offer a hybrid version of all its models.

A Toyota insider said there would not be an Avensis HSD model as the large family saloon and estate sits too near the hybrid-only Prius hatchback.

He said the two models were very closely matched for size, and despite their architecture being similar, the petrol-electric technology would not be carried over.

The decision also rules out a hatchback version of the Avensis, with only the saloon and Tourer models offered, as the Prius fills the gap in the market for a practical hatchback with a wide-opening bootlid.

Big-selling models such as the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia are offered as hatchbacks, and enjoy the largest market share of all bodystyles offered.

But despite this, Toyota expects to grow its share of the large family car market - known as the D segment by the industry - from 10 per cent to 11 per cent across the two models. The expected increase in sales is good news for British manufacturing, with the Avensis built exclusively at Toyota's plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire.

Toyota's claim that it would hybridise its entire range had given rise to rumours of a version of the recently-announced GT 86 coupe powered by a petrol-electric drivetrain. This now appears unlikely.

Such a model would have rivalled the Honda CR-Z, which currently enjoys its status as the only hybrid sportscar on sale in the UK.

Hybrid models offered in Toyota's range include the Prius and Auris HSD, with the Yaris HSD joining the line up in 2012.
