Nissan has chosen the 'EVER' (Ecological Vehicles, Renewable Energies) Monaco 2010 show to display its Nissan Leaf electric car as it nears production.

To be built in the Japan, America and the UK (from 2013), Nissan claims the Leaf will be 'the first affordable, purpose-designed zero emission vehicle from a major car maker to be mass marketed around the world.'

The Nissan Leaf is powered by a 108bhp electric motor, will have a range of around 100 miles and a top speed of more than 90mph.

Monaco has taken a proactive approach to electric cars and plans to have 300 charging stations in place by 2011.

The Principality has signed an agreement with the Renault-Nissan Alliance to be supplied with its electric vehicles.

In the US, Japan and select European markets the Nissan Leaf goes on sale in late 2010, before it is marketed globally in 2012.

Nissan's senior vice president said: "The world is at the dawn of a new era in automotive transport. Nissan Leaf, which will go on sale later this year, is a five-seater hatchback that offers the same space, practicality and performance of a similar car in its class - minus the tailpipe emissions."
