The 2012 Nissan GT-R has had a substantial overhaul to keep it one step ahead of the Porsche 911, BMW M3 and Lotus Evora.

Power has been increased to 542bhp - a jump of 20bhp from the 2011 model and a massive 64bhp from the first GT-Rs sold in the UK in 2009. It will also be more economical and cleaner.

Nissan hasn't quoted a new 0-62mph figure, but three seconds is a good estimate. A mind-boggling level of performance most supercars costing twice as much struggle to match.

Performance improvements have been made by improving air flow efficiency into the engine and by improving the design of the exhaust. The gearbox shift quietness and feel has been enhanced by strengthening several key components and by lubricating it with competition-grade oil.

Suspension settings have also been altered so that the chassis is now stiffer on the same side of the car as the steering wheel, ensuring the car becomes perfectly balanced with a driver in situ.

Inside, the instruments now get additional blue lighting, a rear view camera is fitted as standard and the Bose sound system gets enhanced speakers.

Nissan has also announced a track-focused version of the GT-R is being developed in right-hand drive, specifically for customers who enjoy more track driving. But, further details won't be released until December.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R goes on sale next month, with first deliveries expected in early 2012. No pricing has been announced, but it is expected to remain close to the current model's £71,950 starting price.
