These are the first official pictures of the all-new Volkswagen Touareg SUV. Despite being longer than the outgoing model, the new Touareg - which shares its platform with the new Porsche Cayenne - is up to 200kg lighter and 20 per cent more fuel efficient.

The Touareg's new face is in keeping with VW's new, more angular family look. Its lower roofline also improves its aerodynamics, which is a major contributor to greater efficiency.

The entry-level 3.0 V6 TDI diesel is expected to be the biggest selling model, and also happens to be the most economical, returning 38.1mpg and emitting 195g/km of CO2, despite its 238bhp and 205 lb/ft power output.

Contrary to expectations, the new hybrid model is less efficient, achieving 34mpg, although it is able to drive on electric power alone on speeds up to 30mph. Meanwhile, the range-topping 4.2 V8 TDI produces a massive 590 lb/ft of torque, yet is only slightly thirstier, with average fuel consumption of 31 mpg.

All new Touaregs are equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, touchscreen satellite navigation and a leather interior. And if you fancy delving into the extensive options list, your Touareg can also be equipped with adaptive roll compensation air suspension, blind spot warning and air conditioned, massaging seats.

A new off-road package is also available with front, centre and rear locking differentials for those looking to venture into the wilderness.

The first UK cars will be delivered in August, although prices are yet to be confirmed.
