The wraps have come off the seventh-generation Volkswagen Passat. The large family saloon and estate has been given a new look with fresh headlamps and front grille, while the rear sees a stylish pair of taillights reminiscent of those fitted to the Golf.

The handsome new Passat is slightly larger than the model it replaces, but the increase in size doesn't make for a much bigger cabin.

The interior has seen a raft of improvements, with new dials, an analogue clock and a host of trim finishes which are similar to those found in the manufacturer's flagship Phaeton saloon.

Novel features include a system which allows the operator to open the boot by moving their feet near the rear bumper, as long as the key is nearby.

A number of new-to-Passat engines will be offered. Petrol options include 160bhp 1.4, 160bhp 1.8, 210bhp 2-litre and 300bhp 3.6-litre V6 engines.

However the diesels are expected to account for most sales. The most efficient is a 1.6TDI which returns up to 68.8mpg - with a theoretical range of 1,000 miles - while emitting 109g/km of CO2. This makes it one of the least-polluting models in its class.

A pair of 2-litre TDI diesels will also be available, producing 140 and 170bhp. Most engines can be specified with a manual gearbox or Volkswagen's excellent DSG automatic.

The car will be offered with an optional 'City Emergency Braking Function' which applies the brakes below 18mph, if an imminent collision is detected.

The Passat saloon and estate will go on sale in the UK in mid-October; prices and equipment details will be available nearer launch.
