The V5c vehicle registration document (logbook) issued by the DVLA will have a new look from August 15. The new V5c has not only changed colour - from blue to red - but also contains some new information.

The new certificate will make clear the registration certificate alone is not proof of ownership and will also provide details of where used car buying advice can be found at the government-funded Consumer Direct website. By making buyers aware of risks through its 'Buyer Beware' campaign, the DVLA is aiming to help consumers protect themselves from the risks posed by criminal activity.

The current forms' 'scrap' box has been removed as all vehicles must now be taken to an Authorised Treatment Facility, who issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This ensures they are destroyed in accordance with environmental standards.

Vehicles that are either permanently off the road or being broken up and sold as parts should still be registered as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

Anyone in possession of an old, blue V5c need take no action as both forms are still valid.
