These are the first official pictures and details of the new-look, more efficient Ford Mondeo which goes on sale in October.

The facelifted Mondeo gets the new Ford family face - as seen on the S-Max and Galaxy - as well as a new Ecoboost turbocharged petrol engine and an improved diesel line-up.

Prices will start from the same £17,295 as the current Mondeo, while new-look Titanium models will cost £200 more than before to reflect new features, and will cost from £19,945.

Styling changes include a bolder front grille, a new front bumper featuring LED daytime running lights and re-designed rear lights. Inside, there's a new design of centre console, LED courtesy lights, a new satellite navigation system and improved trim levels for what Ford claims is a more premium feel.

Power will be provided by a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines. Petrol options include a new 237bhp 2-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine, while diesel choices are between a revised 198bhp 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi and a 2-litre unit, in 113, 138 and 161bhp forms.

Ford's six-speed dual-clutch Powershift transmission will be fitted as standard to all Ecoboost engines, and will be available as an option on the 138 and 161bhp diesel variants. Diesel models come with a six-speed manual 'box.

To further improve efficiency, as standard there are regenerative braking, an 'Eco' mode and a new Active Grille Shutter system - which regulates the airflow through the engine compartment to reduce drag.

Safety features include lane departure warning, driver alert, automatic headlights, a speed limiter, blind spot information system and a rear-view camera.
