An all-new Chrysler 300C saloon has been launched in Detroit, offering an affordable alternative to models including the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.

Sharing the same dimensions as the previous version, the heavily revised Chrysler 300C is less distinctive than the previous edition thanks to new grille which represents Chrysler's new corporate look.

With chrome details scattered all over its exterior, LED daytime running lights and generously proportioned alloy wheels, the 300C appears understated and classy, although some of the chrome trim may not make it across the Atlantic.

Because the facelifted 300C was revealed at the Detroit motor show, so far the company has shown only US-spec cars, and only in saloon form.

So while American buyers will be able to buy their 300C with four-wheel drive and a choice of V6 or V8 petrol engines, it's likely that UK buyers will have rear-wheel drive cars with V6 diesel power, possibly with a 'halo model' V8 available to special order.

Slotting into the executive segment, the 300C's key rivals will include the all-new Audi A6, the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes E-Class - all of which are offered with petrol or diesel power.

To compete with such talented opposition, Chrysler has improved cabin quality significantly. The revised car brings with it an upgraded touch-screen multi-media system with larger display plus a glass roof to lighten up the cabin.

Also available will be high-tech safety features such as blind spot warning, adaptive lighting and Forward Collision Warning. There's no word yet of when the facelifted 300C will reach the UK, but it's likely to be here by the summer.
