New car registrations were up 10.8 per cent in June in the UK, compared with the same month last year. Registrations climbed by 19.9 per cent in the first half of 2010 year-on-year, up by over 180,000 to 1.1 million units, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
These figures for June represent the 12th successive monthly increase, despite just 0.7 per cent of registrations resulting from the Government's scrappage scheme, compared with 19.2 per cent during the same period last year.
Alternatively fuelled vehicle registrations - including electric and hybrid cars - matched their largest ever market share, with a 1.2 per cent market share in June. Diesel demand was again high, with the Nissan Qashqai the best-selling diesel in June.
The Vauxhall Astra was the best selling model in June but the Ford Fiesta took the top spot for the first half of 2010, with 57,508 registrations.
