The new 5-Series has been unveiled in Germany. Its revised looks include curvier lines, an inclined kidney front-grille and what BMW describes as a "graceful, coupe-like roofline".
There are seven new engines: four petrol, and three turbodiesels. The 535i delivers 306bhp, while the 523i and 528i deliver 204bhp and 258bhp respectively.
The 525d and 530d produce 204bhp and 245bhp, while the entry-level 520d delivers 184bhp and can achieve 56.5mpg.
The 550i is the most powerful 5-Series, with 407bhp; it can go from 0-62mph in 5 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.
BMW also claims the new 5-Series has the longest wheelbase in its class, with a distance of 2,970mm between the front and back wheels - which should mean good rear legroom.
Dynamic Driving Control will be available as an option, which allows the driver to alter the suspension. All new 5-Series models can include a new eight-speed automatic gearbox as an extra, which comes as standard with the 550i.
Other standard features on all models include Brake Energy Regeneration, a fuel-efficient gearshift point indicator and air-conditioning.
BMW has added lightweight doors, front side panels and suspension components made out of aluminium to reduce weight.
ConnectedDrive systems include parking sensors, collision detection with auto-braking, cruise control, speed limiter and auto stop/start.
Additional extras available are Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, a Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian detection and a back-up camera.
The sixth-generation 5-Series arrives here in April 2010.
