These are the first official pictures of the 2011 Range Rover, which goes on sale this September. The new Range Rover gets a subtle nose job, a new V8 diesel engine, an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission and a limited edition Autobiography Black version to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The new 4.4-litre V8 diesel engine produces 311bhp and 516lb/ft of torque whilst returning 30.1mpg and emitting 253g/km of CO2. This makes it the most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever built and is a 14 per cent improvement in CO2 emissions compared to the outgoing 3.6-litre unit, despite having more power.

It is capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds, 50-70mph in 4 seconds and a top speed of 130mph; the 507bhp 5-litre LR-V8, supercharged petrol engine is still available.

The Terrain Response system gains Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control, which stops the car from running away on slopes even if the driver hasn't selected Hill Descent Control.

A new optional Exterior Design Pack includes a revised front bumper with fog lamp surrounds, front grille and side vents in Titan grey finish, revised side sills, rear bumper and stainless steel exhaust finishers. On the inside, there are optional illuminated treadplates for the front doors and new transmission controls.

The Autobiography Black 40th anniversary limited edition is finished in Barolo Black and features 20-inch alloy wheels, a unique front grille with Titan mesh, a bright chrome edge, a black grille surround, revised side vents, body coloured door handles and unique badging.

Inside, there's a choice of unique two-tone trims, a half-wood Grand Black steering wheel, illuminated sill tread plates and discreet badging.
