Car makers including Renault, Toyota, Suzuki, Volkswagen, Ford and Smart have received plaudits for their performance in this year's MPG Marathon economy event.
The two day, near 400-mile challenge saw winning cars outperforming their official economy ratings. They were driven on public roads.
Winners included the Suzuki Alto, which returned a 74.95mpg average, some 18 per cent ahead of its official Government figure. The latest Suzuki Swift in 1.2 petrol guise returned just over 68mpg.
A Renault Megane Renaultsport 250 returned 47.42mpg over the same course, over 13mpg ahead of its official combined fuel figure.
A driver from the Addison Lee logistics company returned 57.08mpg in a diesel-engined Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCi 140 with a PowerShift transmission.
A Toyota Avensis D-4D diesel saloon recorded over 74mpg, but this was still some way behind a Volkswagen Polo 1.2 Bluemotion diesel, which managed just over 89mpg.
The winning car was a Smart FourTwo CDi diesel, with a figure of 94.66mpg.
