These are the latest official pictures and details of the Mini Coupe and Roadster Concepts. Mini has announced it will increase its range to six distinct models when the production-ready Coupe goes on sale in 2011 and the Roadster a year later.

The two-seat Mini Coupe Concept is 15mm shorter than the hatch and 50mm lower. The look is characterised by oversized wheels, a lightweight aluminium roof and a long tapering profile which leads into a sharp rear spoiler. This has the effect of lowering the car's centre of gravity, reducing air turbulence and increasing downforce for maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

Mini says the Coupe has been "deliberately designed for two people". The slanting roofline provides greater storage access for added practicality while inside, sporty dials and bespoke styling demonstrates its sporting intent.

Power options will incorporate EfficientDynamics and Mini Minimalism principles for improved fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It will inherit the hatch's suspension, braking and steering systems.

With its two seats and tight-fitting soft roof, the Mini Roadster Concept shares the length and width of the regular hatch but is again 50 mm lower.

The Roadster's windscreen is raked back at a steep angle for a more open driving experience. When stowed, the compact fabric roof merges smoothly into the body's lines.

Mini has opted against an electrically-operated roof to save weight. It claims drivers will be able to manually open and close the roof using just one hand within a few seconds.

Safety is taken care of with a stiff passenger cell, reinforced windscreen frame and a full-width rollover bar that springs up instantaneously from behind the headrests.
