To celebrate the 20th birthday of the world's favourite sports car, the Mazda MX-5, the Japanese manufacturer has announced this special edition.

The 20th Anniversary is based on the entry-level, 124bhp 1.8 SE convertible, which Mazda says is closest in spirit to the back-to-basics 1990 original. Performance is therefore relatively modest, with 0-62mph taking 9.9seconds, while its top speed is 121mph.

But the MX-5's appeal has always been its delicate handling and moderate running costs. This version should be no different when it comes to the latter, with combined fuel consumption of 40.4mpg.

As well as the SE's electric, heated door mirrors, electric windows and CD player, the special edition features 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, a body-coloured dashboard, aluminium pedals and air conditioning.

Customers will be offered a choice of True Red or, for an extra £395, Crystal White Pearlescent or Aurora Blue Mica. Just 600 cars will reach the UK, priced at £16,850 when sales start of March 1.
