Hybrid and full electric versions of the Volkswagen Golf have been confirmed, alongside the company's future electric plans.
The all-electric Volkswagen Golf blue-e-motion will go on sale in 2013, as will electric versions of the Jetta and the new Up! city car. A fleet of 500 Golf blue-e-motion prototypes will be tested from next year.
The Golf uses a 113bhp electric motor, which also produces 199 lb/ft of torque from zero revs. Its 0-62mph time is 11.8 seconds, while its top speed is 86mph. It has a range of 90 miles between full charges.
However, before the full electric cars reach the market, a Touareg Hybrid will arrive later this summer with hybrid versions of the Jetta, Golf and Passat arriving from 2012.
"Future electric cars give us enormous opportunities for reshaping mobility to be even more sustainable. When it comes to the environment, however, we must ensure that the energy used to operate these electric cars is produced from renewable sources," said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen AG during the announcements at the National Platform for Electric Mobility in Berlin.
"Governments must ensure that eco-friendly energy sources are utilised. Only then will we experience a genuine transition to a new era."
