Take one small, innovative Audi, add one electric motor and wrap it all up in concept clothing and what have you got? The Audi A2 electric car concept.

The new A2 still boasts those distinctive looks of its identically named predecessor, although a touch of its funkier sibling, the A1, has crept in to the exterior appearance. Also, as one would expect, the concept has some pretty nifty touches all of its own, including a band of light which stretches the length of the vehicle and pulses red when the car is turning or braking.

This concept is a single-speed, all-electric car with a 115bhp lithium ion battery-powered electric motor. The charging socket and the cooling water connection are concealed at the front of the car behind the top half of grille, the bottom half of which acts as an air inlet.

The A2 is also niftier than you might think, thanks to its lightweight construction - a combination of aluminium and Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer helps keep the weight down to just 1,150kg. Although the Audi A2 might top out at 93mph, it will cover the 0-62mph sprint in 9.3 seconds. You'll need to recharge it after 124 miles, but on a quick charging station that should take just 90 minutes.

Even the briefest glimpse is enough to see the A2 is a winner. You're greeted by a step-through between the front and rear seats (no transmission tunnel to accommodate), futuristic touchpads either side of the steering wheel and an opaque sunroof which can be made clear at the touch of a button.

Sadly, Audi is not only calling the A2 a concept, but a "study" so there's no official news on prices or on-sale dates yet. However we'd be surprised not to see a new A2 with a range of power units on sale in the next few years.
