An all-new 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine has been added to the Ford Mondeo range, bringing the trend for using smaller engines to one of the UK's most important models.
Despite its small size, the engine boasts 158bhp, 13bhp more power than 145bhp 2-litre petrol engine fitted in the Mondeo.
It's a cleaner and more economical engine, with an average fuel consumption of 41.5mpg (up from 35.8mpg in the 2-litre) and emissions of 158g/km of CO2 (down from 189g/km).
Even though the Mondeo is a big car, the 1.6 will also accelerate it from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds and gives it a 134mph top speed.
The engine is produced at Ford's Bridgend Plant in Wales and will also power the new Ford C-Max, Ford Grand C-Max, Ford S-Max and Ford Galaxy.
There's also speculation the small size and high power output of the 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine could spawn a new Ford Fiesta ST model with power approaching 200bhp. If so, it would take on the Citroen DS3, Mini Cooper S and Renault Clio Renaultsport.
Ford has also announced a 1.6-litre TDCi diesel will arrive in the Mondeo in Feburary with 113bhp, and it will be able to achieve average fuel consumption of 65.6mpg and emissions of just 115g/km, partly thanks to stop and start technology, aerodynamic tweaks and low rolling resistance tyres.
