The Ford Fiesta has been ranked as the UK's favourite used car, beating the Vauxhall Corsa in new research.

Figures reveal 285,962 used Fiestas were sold in the UK in 2010, overtaking sales of used Corsas by more than 6,000.

The report was compiled by used car valuation service Experian, which discovered sales of the Corsa had slowed, possibly due to the impending launch of a refreshed version which hit showrooms in February.

The third-placed Vauxhall Astra clocked up more than 271,000 sales, narrowly beating the Ford Focus in to fourth with almost 260,000 sales.

But according to data on the most searched for models by Auto Trader, it's the BMW 3-Series and Volkswagen Golf which are the most likely models to see buyers reaching for their wallets. The Corsa rests in ninth place, with the Fiesta in 11th.

However, the two sets of figures appear to indicate that while buyers are most keen on the 3-Series and Golf, when it comes to making a purchase, the lower purchase price and reduced running costs make superminis the most popular.
