Drivers could be at risk of contracting Legionnaires' disease after research linked the condition to water in windscreen washer systems.

If you don't use screenwash in your wiper fluid you're more likely to contract Legionnaires' disease than someone who does, according to research carried out by the Health Protection Agency.

The study showed that one in five cases of Legionnaires' disease was caused by bacteria breeding in washer reservoirs with no screenwash added. It also found those who drive for a living or travel through industrial areas to be most at risk.

Legionnaires' disease occurs in water systems - such as air conditioning or windscreen washers - where infected water is released in a fine spray.

It is a form of pneumonia which can cause flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea and death in around one in 10 of those infected.

Although the HPA says more research is needed to establish a firm connection, it is advisable to take a few simple steps to reduce the risk.

Use screenwash when you top up your windscreen washer system in accordance with the directions stated on the bottle. Solutions are widely available and inexpensive. Using screenwash also reduces the risk of water freezing in winter.

Disinfect the air conditioning system by using a spray which discharges into the air-con unit. The process takes just a few minutes, and spray manufacturers recommend this process is carried out every 12 months.
