The wraps have been taken off the new Chevrolet Aveo at the Detroit motor show, where the car has been unveiled in saloon and hatchback forms.

The new Aveo, known as the Sonic in the US, is unlikely to reach the UK in saloon form, meaning we'll get just the hatchback bodystyle so popular in the UK.

While US buyers will have a choice of 1.4-litre turbo or 1.8-litre petrol engines, we'll get either 85bhp 1.2 or 99bhp 1.4-litre units, alongside a 1.3-litre diesel in 74 or 94bhp forms.

For the new model Chevrolet has drafted in engineers from the Corvette sportscar programme to sharpen things up.

Big-car features are likely to include heated front seats and a high-tech multi-media system along with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Chevrolet has also used higher quality materials throughout the new Aveo's interior.

Safety kit is comprehensive too, with no fewer than 10 airbags fitted, along with brake assist, electronic brake force distribution and electronic stability programme.

Chevrolet's aim is to make the Aveo competitive against best sellers like the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio and Nissan Micra.
