Both the hugely successful Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 have been updated for 2012, making them better to own.

The 1-litre manual will emit 99g/km of CO2 - so it's free to tax and clean enough to be London Congestion Charge exempt. Economy has risen to 65.7mpg in both cars, up from 62.8mpg.

The C1 is also available with an automatic gearbox, although it's not free to tax, emitting 104g/km of CO2 and averaging the same 62.8mpg as the older manual C1. This version gets steering wheel mounted paddles to change gear.

New settings for the power steering and suspension dampers are claimed to improve agility and ride comfort at low speeds.

Both cars feature a new nose, with distinct side pods holding vertical LED daytime running lights and front fog lights. The 107 has a black lower grille running between them - adding to its sporty look, while the C1 has a more grown-up design with a separate chrome grille surround.

The C1 gets two new designs of 14-inch alloy wheels called 'Notus' and 'Rift' and new features including a revised CD audio system and Connecting Box with USB, Auxiliary and Bluetooth connections. New paint colours will make the newest C1 stand out, while the option of a leather and alcantara interior trim offers more luxury than before.

Available in Access, Active and Allure trim levels, the 107 now has air-con standard across the range. Allure models are fitted with alloy wheels, rev counter, USB connection and Bluetooth.

The 107 will start from £7,995 and arrive in showrooms in February, while pricing for the C1 hasn't yet been announced, but is expected to be very similar.
