Chevrolet has given its mid-sized Cruze broader appeal with the launch of a five-door version.

The hatchback Chevrolet Cruze will go up against budget-conscious models like the Kia Ceed and Hyundai i30 in what is Europe's largest new-car segment, dominated by cars like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

The five-door Cruze will debut at this year's Paris Motor Show, and is likely to be shown with the same 1.8-litre petrol and 2-litre diesel engine found in other Chevrolet models.

The Cruze has a low, coupe-style roofline and short body overhangs. Inside it will have 400 litres of cargo space with the back seats folded. Its saloon sibling was awarded five stars for Euro NCAP safety crash testing.

Prices for the five-rood Chevrolet Cruze will be announced closer to its on-sale date during the middle of 2011.
