Chris Moyles will be louder and clearer in 2014, as the majority of new cars will have digital radio as standard.

So far Ford and Vauxhall have agreed to sign up to the digital upgrade, with other car makers expected to join in the near future.

Digital radios in cars will become standard to make way for the digital switchover in 2015, which will see the majority of large radio stations change from FM to DAB.

There has been some reluctance over digital radios due to pan-European issues. Some countries use DAB radios, some use DAB+ and others use DMB.

A spokesperson for the Digital Radio Development Bureau said: "New Profile 1 technology enables radios to work with all kinds of digital signals, and it's likely manufacturers will use this."

Vauxhall's product development director Stuart Harris said: "On our Astra and Insignia models, digital radio is currently either built-in or a £150 upgrade. By 2013 it will be available across all our models."

There are currently over 100 cars from 15 different manufacturers which include DAB radio as an optional extra.

Motorists with old vehicles will be able to upgrade their FM radio to a DAB radio with products such as the Pure Highway which sticks to the windscreen.
