BMW has confirmed it will build its fastest M3 in history - the BMW M3 GTS. The German manufacturer claims the M3 GTS will be the 'ultimate track day car with on-road capability'.

It features a version of the standard car's V8 engine, increased in size from 4 to 4.4-litres, and with a power output of 450bhp.

Fittingly, acceleration from 0-62mph takes 4.4 seconds, and its top speed is an unprecedented - for a small saloon - 190mph.

A tuned version of the seven-speed M Dual-Clutch Transmission has been designed for rapid gear changes, without interruption of engine power under acceleration.

The suspension is based on the M3 Coupe's, but with motorsport tweaks. The car can be lowered by 16mm at the front and 12mm at the rear, its dampers can be adjusted individually and the tyres and wheels are unique.

It's even possible to tweak the camber (the angle of lean of the wheels) for the ultimate track, or road, setup.

Huge brake discs and callipers and tuning of its stability control, ABS and M Dynamic Mode settings should keep the extra performance in check.

Lightweight door panels, centre console construction and plastic side and rear windows help to reduce overall weight. But, bigger savings are made by ditching the rear seats and fitting a titanium exhaust. Overall, the GTS weighs 70kg less than a standard car.

The interior is focused on speed, with racing seats and Alcantara trim the order of the day.

Only available in a unique orange paint scheme, the BMW M3 GTS will be built in right-hand drive from January 2011, with an unconfirmed price tag.
